Dynamic Kino 2011 - Media Package

This year the organisers decided to go with the future and instead of selling DVDs with the produced films, they uploaded them to the internet. Having finally done that, I present you a selection from the Vimeo group here.

Note that not all films that were produced are available (director decided against it), including the first one I worked with. On the other hand, a few are there as well that weren't shown at the screenings.

Dieses Jahr hatten sich die Organisatoren entschlossen mit der Zukunft zu gehen und anstelle DVDs mit den produzierten Filmen zu verkaufen, wurden sie ins Internet geladen. Nachdem dies nun vollständig passiert ist, präsentiere ich eine Selektion von der Vimeo Gruppe hier.

Es ist anzumerken, dass nicht alle produzierten Filme verfügbar sind (Regisseur entschied dagegen), inklusive dem ersten Film bei dem ich mitarbeitete. Dafür gibt es ein paar Filme, die bei keiner Vorstellung dabei waren.

Dynamic Kino 2011 - Day 6, This is the end

It was a typical last day of the KinoDynamique festival. Slow start in the morning, hectic work in the afternoon and a long screening.

Throughout the day I helped a russian guest to get her movie together. We did some voice over recordings of people speaking various languages, but in the end she failed to turn in her movie in time.

The movie I worked with the day before came out fine and received some decent applause at the screening. I did one other voice over recording and helped a bit here and there.

The main event was the screening of course, in the cinema filled with the filmmakers and friends. As expected, the screening lasted until 2am for all the movies - of which some were even finished while the first ones were shown. A very funny short was a music video to a rap song, mocking one of the german regulars who, like nearly always, fails to complete his project within the time frame of one session.

Today I already stored away my stuff and I'm still unsure whether or not I want to attend the after-party today afternoon. The festival could have been a little longer, you sense the difference between 60 and 36 hours per session, but there is still that nagging feeling of missing something now that it's over.

Perhaps attending such a festival only once per year keeps this experience fresh.

 

Es war ein typischer letzter Tag des KinoDynamique Festivals. Ein langsamer Start am Morgen, hektische Arbeit am Nachmittag und eine lange Vorstellung.

Durch den Tag half ich einem russischen Gast bei ihrem Film. Wir machten ein paar Sprachaufnahmen von verschiedenen Leuten in unterschiedlichen Sprachen, aber am Ende schaffte sie es nicht den Film zeitgerecht fertig zu stellen.

Der Film bei dem ich am Tag zuvor mitgearbeitet hatte wurde recht gut und erhielt guten Applaus bei der Vorstellung. Ich hatte eine weitere Sprachaufnahme gemacht und sonst da und dort geholfen.

Der wichtigste Punkt war natürlich die Vorstellung, in einem durch Filmemacher und deren Freunden gefülltem Kino. Wie erwartet dauerte die Vorstellung bis 2 in der Früh für alle Filme, von denen ein paar sogar erst fertig wurden als die ersten schon gezeigt wurden. Ein recht lustiger Kurzfilm war ein Musikvideo zu einem Rap-Lied, einen deutschen Stammgast auf die Schaufel nehmend, weil er wie üblich es nicht schaffte seinen Film innerhalb des vorgegebenen Rahmens einer Runde fertig gemacht hatte.

Heute habe ich bereits meine Sachen wieder verstaut und bin noch unsicher ob oder nicht ich noch der Feier am Nachmittag beiwohnen möchte. Das Festival hätte etwas länger sein können, man spürt den Unterschied zwischen 60 und 36 Stunden, trotzdem hat man das nagende Gefühl etwas zu vermissen, jetzt wo es vorbei ist.

Vermutlich weil ich nur ein mal pro Jahr an solch einem Festival teil nehme bleibt diese Erfahrung frisch.

Dynamic Kino 2011 - Day 5, Beach Party

With a kind of late start after lunchtime, the new formed teams spread out for new productions. First I was booked for one, then I had appointments to be at three shootings around town.

But the first one went off without me as they needed a sound recorder for longer that I could be available. Not telling me this led to a bit of confusion first, but the second started soon anyway. It was in a cafe and featured a gun - not the first on this festival.

Afterwards I was requested for some few recordings of a birthday party on the beach - if the "Kaiserwasser" pond can be called that. The only tedious part was that I had to travel there and back.

So, in sum nothing exciting on this day, we will see what today brings. It's the final day and several voice over recordings planned. The screening today will probably be also quite long.

Mit einem etwas verspätetem Start nach der Mittagszeit verteilten sich die neuen Gruppen für neue Produktionen. Zuerst war ich nur für eine reserviert, dann hatte ich plötzlich Termine für drei Filmdrehs in der Stadt.

Aber die erste Gruppe ging ohne mich los da sie einen Tontechniker länger brauchten als ich Zeit hatte. Dass mir das nicht gesagt wurde brachte zuerst etwas Verwirrung, aber die zweite Gruppe startete sowieso recht bald. Es war in einem Cafe und war mit einer Pistole - nicht die erste in diesem Festival.

Nachher war ich für ein paar Aufnahmen bei einer Geburtstagsfeier am Strang gefragt - wenn man den "Kaiserwasser" Teich so nennen darf. Das einzig anstrengende war die Reise hin und zurück.

Also war in Summe nicht viel spannendes los an diesem Tag, man wird sehen was heute passieren wird. Es ist der letzte Tag und mehrere Sprachaufnahmen sind geplant. Die Voführung heute Abend wird vermutlich wieder recht lange werden.

Dynamic Kino 2011 - Day 4, There is not one...

Typical for the day of the screening, the morning up until supper time was calm enough, with projects slowly getting up to speed. Three hours before the deadline for turning in the movies, hectical actions start to take over.

I again did some funny voice over recordings, which had us all - the actor, the director(s) and me - laughing whole heartedly. Furthermore I was able to give support to two who had never edited a movie before. I did neither, but at least I know enough of the video editing software to give them some hints and general help. Next to a few entries in the "Sound" credits, I also made it to "Thanks" credits this way.

For one movie I recorded a small, cylinder-based metal instrument that plays a small melody. I've had one of those last year as well, but back then we didn't know that you need to put it against a metal surface to be heard properly. I've attached one of these amazing recordings below.

I even tried my hand on some "sound design" work for one project, which essentially was only applying some effects on a piece of music. I'm not that happy with the result, but at least it's something.

And with the second screening over, again a small thought starts to grow: After this last session starting today, it's going to be over again.

Typisch für den Tag der Vorstellungen, der Morgen bis zu Mittag war ruhig mit den Projekten die langsam in Gang kamen. Drei Stunden vor Abgabetermin der Filme wurden dann die Aktionen recht hektisch.

Ich hatte wieder ein paar Sprachaufnahmen gemacht, die uns alle - Schauspieler, Regisseurinnen und mich - herzhaft lachen ließen. Außerdem konnte ich Unterstützung für Zwei geben, die vorher noch nie einen Film geschnitten hatten. Das habe ich zwar auch noch nicht, aber ich kenne die Schnittprogramme so weit um den Leuten ein paar Hinweise und Hilfe zu geben. Neben ein paar Einträgen der "Ton" Kategorie, bin ich nun auch bei den "Danksagungen" im Abspann.

Für einen Film nahm ich ein kleines, Zylinder-Metall Instrument auf, welches eine kleine Melodie spielen kann. Ich hatte so eins schon letztes Jahr, nur da wussten wir nicht, dass man es gegen ein Metall pressen muss um es laut hören zu können. Ich habe eine dieser tollen Aufnahmen unten angehängt.

Ich habe sogar einen Versuch im "Sound-Design" für ein Projekt gemacht, der im Endeffekt nur das Anwenden von ein paar Effekten über ein Stück Musik war. Ich bin nicht ganz glücklich mit dem Ergebnis, aber immerhin etwas.

Und mit der zweiten Aufführung vorbei wächst wieder ein kleiner Gedanke: Nach dieser letzten Runde die heute startet ist es wieder vorbei.

Dynamic Kino 2011 - Day 3, Acting Out

The new production meeting yesterday had the whole group change a little bit, a few people were gone, a few others new. With 20 movies announced today's screening might be twice as long as the first.

On the movie I went with yesterday one of the actors had to take over the part of camera operator and sometimes even went as far as to direct. The writer, whose idea the story was, pretty much became played to the wall by the performance. Since so many takes were spent on little details, things were getting rushed at the end of the day as the sun went down. Back at the lab, I stopped the actor becoming the editor as well and acquired someone else for the job.

I talked with other directors yesterday and today I will be again spending most of the time for voice over recording and minor processing. I start to like this two-day-rhythm.

Beim neuen Produktionsmeeting gestern hatte sich die gesamte Gruppe leicht verändert, ein paar Leute waren gegangen, ein paar andere neu. Mit 20 angemeldeten Filmen wird die heutige Vorstellung wohl doppelt so lang with die Erste.

Bei dem Film bei dem ich mit war gestern hatte ein Schauspieler die Rolle des Kameramanns übernehmen müssen und ging zeitweise so weit Regie zu führen. Der Autor, dessen Idee die Geschichte war, wurde ziemlich an die Wand gespielt. Da so viele Klappen für kleine Details verwendet wurden, musste am Ende des Tages alles übereilt gemacht werden, da die Sonne am Untergehen war. Zurück im Lab hielt ich dann den Schauspieler auf, auch noch zum Editor zu werden und holte uns einen anderen.

Ich hatte gestern auch mit anderen Regisseuren gesprochen und werde heute wieder hauptsächlich Sprachaufnahmen und kleine Bearbeitungen machen. Mir gefällt langsam dieser Zwei-Tages-Rhythmus.

Dynamic Kino 2011 - Day 2, Post-Pro

The second day was simple enough and also had me do some work finally as of course several projects wanted to finish.

For my main project I had to do some voice over recordings and after we finished, the next people wanted to record some text in the room. Since they planned to do so with a dictation-device, I offered to do it with better quality and immediately got further work. After completing all the processing, another director stood next to me and asked me to add a prerecorded text to his movie - two hours before completion time.

This was even more interesting since he yet didn't know which text to use and where to place it. With only one headphone jack, I plugged him up and let him direct me what to cut out and place where.

The picture shows a typical funny had-to-be-there moment; Matthias explains a director what and how he should prepare for his next project since he said "Well, my project files are scattered around several computers, there's nothing on mine."

The screening in the evening was great as always, with several good movies. The two hosts were funny as well with lines such as "And we've got another international movie... from Austria!"

And today the second round starts.

 

Der zweite Tag war recht simpel und lies mich endlich etwas Arbeit erledigen da mehrere Projekte fertig werden wollten.

Für mein Hauptprojekt waren die Sprachaufnahmen zu machen und nachdem wir fertig waren, wollten die nächsten Leute eine Aufnahme in dem Raum machen. Da die das mit einem Diktiergerät machen wollten, bot ich ihnen an das mit besserer Qualität zu machen und hatte somit gleich mehr Arbeit. Nachdem ich mit all der Bearbeitung fertig war, stand schon der nächste Regisseur bei mir und wollte bereits aufgenommenen Text zum Film anlegen - Zwei Stunden vor Abgabetermin.

Das war noch interessanter, weil er noch nicht wusste welchen Text er nehmen wollte und wohin. Mit nur einem Kopfhörerstecker schloss ich ihn an und lies ihn mich anweisen was wohin zu schneiden.

Das Bild zeigt eine typisch komische Situationskomik; Matthias erklärt einem Regisseur was und wie er sein nächstes Projekt organisieren sollte da er sagte "Nun, meine Projektdateien sind über mehrere Rechner verteilt, da ist nichts auf meinem."

Die Vorführung am Abend war wie immer toll, mit mehreren guten Filmen. Die beiden Präsentatoren waren auch lusting mit Sätzen wie "Wir haben noch einen internationalen Film... aus Österreich!"

Und heute startet die zweite Runde.

Dynamic Kino 2011 - Day 1, Ice-Ice-Baby

Apparently it becomes my tradition to end up at St. Stephens Church on the first day of these festivals, but this time I was alone there. And with a wrong telephone number the director gave out consequently to the others as well, and after a few journeys, I was finally at the site of shooting - not far from my flat.

Essentially, it's a quite artistically-inspired (read: unplanned) production and people are constantly given off comments while shooting - I'm hardly recording anything, mainly the surroundings for the atmos. After all, there should be voice-overs recorded today.

I'm still not quite sure what the movie is about. I didn't take part in the various discussions, avoiding to throw in yet another opinion. But scenes even include applying ice cream on a shopping window of an empty shop.

After that scene was done, the director even signed it and wanted to leave it like that with the words "Fuck the system!" (In German, mind you). But she has the wrong one in her team for this and I started to apply the wet towel to remove the mess. In a team effort (without the director) we managed to get the window clean again.

The image shows one of the two actresses, which had to act with the ice cream in the scene. One will have to see the movie to see what that is. Today is the first screening - 10:30pm in the Filmcasino!

Anscheinend wird es meine Tradition am Stephansplatz am ersten Tag dieser Festivals zu sein, jedoch diesmal war ich alleine dort. Und mit einer falschen Telefonnummer, die die Regisseurin all mehrere konsequent ausgab und ein paar Reisen, war ich endlich am Platz der Aufnahmen - nicht weit von meiner Wohnung.

Im Wesentlichen ist es eine künstlerisch-inspirierte (lies: planlose) Produktion und die Leute geben permanent Kommentare aus dem Off während der Aufnahmen - Ich nehme kaum was auf, gerade mal die Umgebungsgeräsuche für die Atmos. Es sollen ja sowieso die Sprachaufnahmen heute gemacht werden.

Ich bin noch immer nicht sicher, worum es in dem Film geht. Ich nahm nicht an den diversen Diskussionen teil um eine weitere Meinung zu Vermeiden. Aber Szenen inkludierten selbst die Anwendung von Eiscreme auf ein Fenster eines leeren Geschäfts.

Nachdem diese Szene erledigt war signierte es die Regisseurin und wollte es so mit den Worten "Fick das System!" stehen lassen. Doch hat sie den Falschen für sowas in der Gruppe und ich begann den nassen Festzen zur Reinigung anzuwenden. Mit der Kraft der Gruppe (ohne der Regisseurin) schafften wir es das Fenster wieder rein zu bekommen.

Das Bild zeigt eine der Schauspielerinnen, die mit der Eiscreme zu spielen hatte. Man wird sich den Film ansehen müssen, um zu wissen was das ist. Heute ist die erste Vorführung - 22:30 im Filmcasino!

Dynamic Kino 2011 - Day 0

It wasn't really a day, only an evening where the festival was opened and everyone introduced themselves. There are several new faces and some people I would have thought they'd come didn't. All in all it's a brand new bunch of people with various projects.

The organizers spoke of about 120 registrations and I believe about 10 different nationalities. But with the changed rules and less support by the organizers, you can feel that the set up is different this year. We're also a handful of sound people this time.

The introductions were funny as always - some came up and opened with "I'm drunk!", both with words or behavior, but they were a minority, so it was more on the funny than tragic side. A greek opened with "I'm from Greece and yes, I still got money to spend!".

The first project I came to is more of a voice-over work, but I'm still tagging along with the shooting. On the downside, I had to get up early today. I shouldn't be surprised, I'm the one who described the festival along with "You don't get much sleep".

Es war nicht wirklich ein Tag, nur ein Abend an dem das Festival eröffnet wurde und sich jeder vorgestellt hatte. Es gibt mehrere neue Gesichter und einige Leute von denen ich dachte sie würden kommen blieben aus. In Summe ein ganz neuer Haufen Leute mit verschiedenen Projekten.

Die Organisatoren sprachen von ungefähr 120 Registrierungen und ich glaube 10 unterschiedlichen Nationalitäten. Aber mit den veränderten Regeln und weniger Unterstützung von den Organisatoren spürt man die etwas andere Aufstellung dieses Jahr. Wir sind auch eine Handvoll Tontechniker dieses Mal.

Die Vorstellungen waren Lustig wie immer - ein paar stellten sich vor mit "Ich bin betrunken!", sowohl mit Worten als auch Verhalten, doch die blieben in der Minderheit, somit war es mehr amüsant denn tragisch. Ein Grieche eröffnete mit "Ich bin Grieche und ja, ich habe noch Geld zum Ausgeben!".

Das erste Projekt zu dem ich kam wird mehr Sprachaufnahmen haben, doch ich gehe mit den Filmaufnahmen mit. Das hat nur den Nachteil, dass ich heute früh aufstehen musste. Ich sollte mich nicht wundern, beschrieb ich doch das Festival immer mit "Schlaf gibt es wenig".

Dynamic Kino 2011

In a few days, the annual KinoDynamique starts here in Vienna - one of the events I'm looking forward to as soon as the previous one is over (Here are my last years adventures).

This year it's going to be interesting again; The people behind it from kino5 announced that they are going back to the roots of these Kino-Kabarrets, as they are called everywhere else on the world. Everyone, not just directors as in previous years, will be allowed to make and present a film. Also, instead of the previous 60 hours per session, only 36 hours will be available to bring a film from the idea to the silver screen.

As in the last years there was hardly time for post for audio, I don't expect to get any chance this year. In the light of this, I'm not planning to take my mixer with me, which furthermore saves me a lot of luggage to get there. Just a recorder and a boom, and off I go :)

I already started to reload my batteries and prepare my equipment - there's not much time left until Wednesday.

The screenings of all the movies will be again in the Filmcasino, always at (or around ;) 10:30pm on the 20th, 22nd and 24th of May for each respective session.

In wenigen Tagen startet das jährliche KinoDynamique hier in Wien - eine der Veranstaltungen, auf die ich mich schon freue kaum dass die vorige vorbei ist (Hier sind meine Abenteuer vom letzten Jahr).

Dieses Jahr wird wieder interessant; Die Leute hinter allem von kino5 hatten verkündet, dass sie zurück zu den Wurzeln dieser Kino-Kabarrets, wie sie sonst auf der Welt genannt werden, gehen. Jeder, nicht nur Regisseure wie in den letzten Jahren, darf einen Film machen und präsentieren. Ausserdem, statt den bisherigen 60 Stunden pro Runde, sind es nur 36 Stunden in denen ein Film von der Idee auf die Leinwand gebracht werden soll.

Da schon in den letzten Jahren kaum Zeit für die Nachbearbeitung vom Ton war, erwarte ich keine Chance dieses Jahr. Deswegen werde ich auch nicht das Mischpult mitnehmen, was mir daher einiges an Gepäck erspart. Nur ein Recorder und eine Tonangel, und schon gehts los :)

Ich habe bereits damit angefangen, meine Batterien zu laden und die Ausrüstung vorzubereiten - viel Zeit bleibt nicht mehr bis Mittwoch.

Die Vorführungen aller Filme wird wieder im Filmcasino passieren, immer um (ca. ;) 22:30 am 20., 22. und 24. Mai für jede der drei Runden.
