EVE Fanfest 2014, all in all

So, Fanfest again. There hasn't been a daily summary for various reasons; A major one was that I didn't have proper secure internet access (the hotel only offered unencrypted WLAN). And second, well it didn't feel so special anymore.

Don't get me wrong, it was still a great experience; But like I wrote last year that last year would have been my last visit, I feel now the same again. Although I like the city of Reykjavik, the live experience of Fanfest doesn't have so many exciting stuff anymore.
Of course, there was the unveiling of the monument and it was fun to look for your own name - And watching the new trailer on the big screen at concert audio level is cool.

I also played the demo of EVE Valkyrie on the new Oculus DK2, the new VR headset, which was great. I'm quite curious about this game and joined all the corresponding panels and presentations.

This year I also participated in the silent auction and got the highest bid on a large flag with "EVE" written on it. A nice, rare curiosity for me and 100 EUR for children in need.

The movie morning showed a good mix of good old videos and new ones this year, some of which I even didn't know. One brought me to tears from laughing.

I also met two people that I befriended at my first Fanfest and with whom I did the scavenger hunt back then. I found this quite fitting, sort of closing a circle. I know I said it last year, but next year something extraordinaire must happen that I'll book the flight again.

Oh, speaking of flights: I nearly lost my flight back to Germany on Sunday. I should have taken the transfer bus one hour earlier. Because when I arrived at the airport (about 40 minutes before boarding), I saw that pretty much every tourist in Island decided to fly now as well. Quite thrilling when you still have 20 people in front of you at the security check and they announce "Last Call" on the speakers... Such a small airport can be quite big if you have to run through it.

 

Fanfest also wiedermal. Es gab keine täglichen Zusammenfassungen aus verschiedenen Gründen. Ein wichtiger war, dass ich keinen gesicherten Internetzugang dafür hatte; Im Hotel gab es nur unverschlüsseltes WLAN. Und Zweitens fühlte es sich nicht mehr so speziell an.

Nicht falsch verstehen, es war immer noch ein tolles Erlebnis; Aber wie ich schon letztes Jahr meinte, dass es mein letzter Besuch gewesen war, denke ich mir nun das gleiche wieder. Obwohl ich die Stadt Reykjavik mag, gibt es nicht mehr so viele Dinge die aus erster Hand reizvoll sind.
Natürlich, da war die Enthüllung des Monuments und es war lustig nach seinem eigenen Namen zu suchen - Und den neuen Trailer am großen Schirm bei Konzertlautstärken zu sehen ist auch cool.

Ich spielte auch die Demo von EVE Valkyrie am neuen Oculus DK2, der neuen VR Brille, was großartig war. Ich bin sehr neugierig auf dieses Spiel und hatte alle zugehörigen Diskussionsrunden und Vorträge besucht.

Am Film-Morgen wurde dieses Jahr eine gute Mischung aus guten alten Videos sowie neuen gezeigt, von denen ich ein paar sogar noch gar nicht kannte. Bei einem hatte ich Tränen lachen müssen.

Ich hatte auch zwei Leute getroffen mit denen ich mich auf meinem ersten Fanfest befreundet und damals die Bilderjagd gemacht hatte. Ich fand das recht passend, als würde sich ein Kreis schließen. Ich weiß, ich sagte das bereits letztes Jahr, aber nächstes Jahr muss schon was spezielles passieren, damit ich wieder den Flug buchen werde.

Ah, apropos Flüge: Ich hatte beinahe meinen Flug zurück nach Deutschland am Sonntag verpasst. Ich hätte den Transferbus eine Stunde früher nehmen sollen. Als ich am Flughafen ankam (ca 40 Minuten vor Boarding), sah ich dass so ziemlich alle Touristen in Island entschieden hatten ebenfalls nun fliegen zu wollen. Recht spannend wenn man noch 20 Leute beim Security-Check vor sich hat und der "Letzte Aufruf" über die Lautsprecher verkündet wird... So ein kleiner Flughafen kann recht groß sein, wenn man durch ihn laufen muss.

KinoCuntra 2013 - Day 3, Few experiments, and abort

In the style of a kino kabaret, yesterday started with a few experiments since the organizers managed to lock in all their keys in the lab for which the owner only came after lunch.

We thus started the editing in the second place, where I did the voice over recording the day before. For the remainder of the day it was quite calm, with my project delayed a bit. But they managed to complete it in time for the screening, which, as always, started a little late.

The screening itself was well received, with a good extra bunch of visitors interested in what we did.
But today I woke with a cold. The sore throat from yesterday already foreshadowed what would happen. I'm ill, and as a result I aborted  my stay and I'm already in the train back to Vienna.

It was fun, short as it was, and I might consider visiting Graz again next year.

Im Stile eines Kino Kabarets hatten wir gestern mit ein paar Experimenten begonnen da die Organisatoren es geschafft hatten alle ihre Schlüssel im Lab einzusperren, zu dem die Besitzerin erst nach dem Mittagessen kam.

Daher begannen wir den Schnitt in den Räumlichkeiten, die ich am Vortag für die Sprachaufnahmen verwendet hatte. Der Rest des Tages verlief recht ruhig, mit einer kleinen Verzögerung bei dem Projekt wo ich mitgearbeitet hatte. Aber sie schafften es rechtzeitig den Film abzugeben - Für die Vorstellung, die erwartungsgemäß später als geplant anfing.

Die Vorstellung war gut besucht, mit einigen Extragästen die interessiert waren was wir gemacht hatten.
Aber heute wachte ich mit einer Verkühlung auf. Das Halsweh gestern hatte es schon angekündigt. Ich bin nun krank und daher brach ich das Unternehmen ab und sitze nun im Zug zurück nach Wien.

Es hatte Spaß gemacht, so kurz es auch war, und ich überlege vielleicht nächstes Jahr wieder Graz zu besuchen.

KinoCuntra 2013 - Day 2, Business as usual

So far it's business as usual; shooting on site and trying to catch the morning sun hiding behind a clock tower, visiting the kitchen of some stranger and voice-over recording in strange locations.

But at least it's a calm shooting, with only 5 scenes in total we have plenty of time for a break and enjoy a drink at a cafe. Yesterday we went to a vegan restaurant and I also spotted an Indian restaurant near the lab.
It is my holiday after all.

We also watched a director draining buckets of water over his actresses - so far it's still unclear what that will be about. 

Today is the first screening, that most likely means only work based in or around the lab for me. Yesterday evening we did some voice-over recording in a makeshift sound studio in the vicinity, which you access through a small metal door normally reserved for maintenance work.

So weit ist es mal wie üblich; Dreh in der Stadt früh morgens, der Sonne hinterher die sich hinter einem Uhrturm versteckt, Besuch einer Küche eines Unbekannten und Sprachaufnahmen in seltsamen Umgebungen.

Aber zumindest ist es ein ruhiger Dreh, mit nur 5 Szenen bleibt uns genügend Zeit für Pausen und für etwas zu Trinken in einem Cafe. Gestern gingen wir auch zu einem Veganer-Restaurant und ich sah auch schon ein indisches Lokal in der Nähe vom Lab.
Es ist schließlich Urlaub.

Wir hatten auch einen Regisseur beobachtet, der Kübel voll Wasser über seine Schauspielerinnen leert - Bislang ist es immer noch unklar worum es da gehen wird.

Heute ist am Abend die Vorstellung, was bedeutet, dass ich vermutlich wieder nur in oder um dem Lab arbeiten werde. Gestern Abend zeichneten wir noch eine Sprachaufnahme auf, in einem gebastelten Tonstudio, das man über eine kleine Metalltüre erreicht, die eher nur für Wartungsarbeiten gedacht ist. 

KinoCuntra 2013 - Making movies somewhere else

I'm attending another Kino Kabaret this year, but not in Vienna. A few weeks ago I received a mail about the birth of another Kino cell in Graz, which was organizing their kabaret this week.

Getting to Graz is reasonably easy with public transport and doesn't involve booking a flight for which I'd need to clear all my equipment (including the long boom pole). So, after about two and a half hour by train, I arrived in Graz yesterday evening and made it just in time to the introduction round.

I am the only sound engineer amongst about 40 people, which earned me another round of applause just for mentioning my field. But the one project I signed up for today didn't have use for me until the evening, so I had much time to chill out and chat with few people.

But tomorrow we'll start at 8am in the morning since there's much to do.
Also, I couldn't attach a picture since I haven't figured out how to get a picture from my Android phone to my Android tablet albeit Bluetooth-paired. Waving or pumping the devices didn't work as advertised either. 

Ich nehme gerade an einem weiteren Kino Kabaret teil, aber nicht in Wien. Vor ein paar Wochen erhielt ich die mail über die Geburt einer neuen Kino Zelle in Graz, die nun auch ein Kabaret diese Woche organisierte.

Nach Graz ist es halbwegs einfach mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln zu kommen und braucht auch keine Buchung eines Flugs, bei dem ich auch noch meine Ausrüstung (inklusive der Mikrofonangel) durchbringen müsste. Nach nur zweieinhalb Stunden mit dem Zug kam ich in Graz gestern Abend an und schaffte es gerade noch zur Vorstellungsrunde.

Ich bin der einzige Tontechniker unter knapp 40 Leuten, was mir wieder eine Runde Applaus einbrachte nachdem ich meine Arbeit angesagt hatte. Aber das eine Projekt bei dem ich mich heute gemeldet hatte, brauchte mich erst am Abend, was mir genug Zeit gab um auszuspannen und mit ein paar Leuten zu plaudern.

Jedoch werden wir morgen um 8 Uhr früh starten, weil es noch viel zu tun gibt.
Ich habe übrigens auch kein Foto angehängt, weil ich habs nicht zusammengebracht die Bilder von meinem Android Smartphone auf mein Android tablet zu kopieren, obwohl per Bluetooth verbunden. Herumwedeln oder Anstoßen wie in der Werbung hats auch nicht gebracht.

 

Dynamic Kino 2013 - Day 1.2 & 1.3, It ended before it began

In sum, this short instalment of KinoDynamique did not contain any special events for me, other than seeing a lot of old acquaintances as well as the usual exhausting work.

One project that I was planned for had to change plans, so the beginning was essentially about waiting until the one big project I was assigned to started. This one then brought us to a shooting in a park during rain on day 2, although I managed to stay under an umbrella for the most part during the rain. (In the final film, hardly any of my audio recordings from that were used...)
In the night, while walking to our final set, we came a cross an old woman that seemed lost. She asked for directions and through the following exchange we found out she lost her handbag with all her belongings. We called the police to help her out and a few minutes later, a patrol car arrived and they took her with them.

Our final set that night was in a hallway of a housing block. It took some time for the directors and actors to rehearse the sequence. When we finally got to record the whole thing, after the second take at 2am, sure enough a security guard asked us to leave. We then moved to a public place, rehearsed again and then recorded it. I got home under the singing of the morning birds.

Day 3 was quite uneventful as well, with only one quickie recording for me. At least this quickie got good laughs at the screening. The screening itself was quite nice as well, with about 12 films. The film I worked on nearly didn't make it in time, but worked out fine. I didn't stay long at the party afterwards. 

I went into the one-session-only kabaret with neutral expectations - and to some extent, I'm still neutral about it after it's done. One the one hand for example, projects had to be finished in time - there was no next session to delay to, which happened all the time in the longer kabarets. On the other hand, there is not too much interaction with other people than the ones on your project. The kinolab, the base for the kabaret, was mostly empty.

What made the most fun was actually the quickie, a work of roughly 2-3 hours. I guess the key would be to focus only on quickies in such formats. Otherwise it simply feels like any other student project, crammed into a weekend with staying awake late into the nights. That's something to consider for the next one that they are planning.

Dynamic Kino 2013 - Day 1.2, Trailer

It has been some time since I returned home at the beginning of dawn of a new day, but, custom as delays are at such short film projects, I came home at 4:30am today. Combined with the ususal "oversleeping" I don't have time to provide a proper entry.

In short, we filmed in both rain and sunshine, helped an old woman find back home and were warned to film on private property at night. Screening is today evening, let's see what's going to happen.

Es ist schon etwas her, dass ich zum Anbruch der Morgendämmerung nach Hause kam, aber, wie solche Verzögerungen bei diesen Kurzfilmprojekten üblich sind, bin ich heute erst um 4:30 in der Früh nach Hause gekommen. Zusammen mit dem typischen "Verschlafen" habe ich nun keine Zeit einen vollständigen Eintrag zu liefern.

In kurzen Worten, wir drehten sowohl im Regen als auch der Sonne, halfen einer alten Frau nach Hause zu kommen und wurden verwarnt auf einem Privatgrundstück in der Nacht zu drehen. Screening ist heute Abend, mal sehen was passieren wird.

Dynamic Kino 2013 - Day 1.1, Smaller, faster, less work

It's that time of the year again, although there will be several this year. Creating short films in only a few hours. But this year they organized the sessions to be only one on a weekend, with two more happening later this year.

With the smaller advertising the turnout is smaller, with only about 50 people participating. As always, many old faces and a few new ones as well. With only two sound engineers we are highly requested and getting all requests into a schedule as always. One of the organizers said he was relieved when he saw my registration.

While waiting for my first project to start, I already recorded a first voice-over. When the director arrived in the evening, we agreed to use the other sound engineer, which just returned, so that I can go to sleep to be ready for shooting today morning. And now I received a message that they could continue only in the afternoon today, so they can't use me since I'm already booked for a second project for that time. Planning and overtimes as usual at the kino kabaret ;)

In essence a calm start and meeting old acquaintances. There are also some pictures of the production meeting online here (with an unfortunate picture of me ;).

Es ist wieder diese Zeit des Jahres, obwohl es dieses Jahr mehrere geben wird. Kurzfilme in nur kurzer Zeit erstellen. Aber dieses Jahr haben sie die Runden so organisiert, dass nur eine an einem Wochenende gemacht wird, mit zwei weiteren später im Jahr.

Mit kleinerer Werbung ist der Ansturm auch kleiner, mit ungefähr 50 Leuten teilnehmend. Wie immer gibt es viele alte Gesichter sowie ein paar neue zu sehen. Mit nur zwei Tontechniker sind wir gefragt und alle Anfragen in einem Terminplan zu bringen ist wie immer schwierig. Einer der Organisatoren meinte, dass er erleichtert war, als er meine Registrierung sah.

Wärend ich auf den Start des ersten Projekts wartete, nahm ich schnell eine Sprachaufnahme auf. Als die Regisseurin endlich am Abend kam um zu starten, hatten wir uns geeinigt den anderen Tontechniker, der ebenfalls gerade kam, einzusetzen, damit ich schlafen gehen konnte um fit für den weiteren Dreh heute Morgen zu sein. Und jetzt hatte ich die Nachricht erhalten, dass sie erst am Nachmittag weiter drehen würden und mich somit nicht mehr einsetzen konnten, da ich schon für ein zweites Projekt gebucht bin. Planung und Verzüge wie immer am Kino Kabaret ;)

In Summe ein ruhiger Start und Treffen alter Bekannter. Es gibt auch schon erste Bilder vom Produktionsmeeting online hier (mit einem unglücklichen Bild von mir ;).

EVE Fanfest 2013, Days 2, 3 and overall

I didn't have much time for writing about either the second or third days, so with this post I'll cover them both with some roundup.

On the second day I started with the session about CCPs other game: "World of Darkness", which came down to "There won't be a game for another one or even two years". Later on I joined in on the dev-track again, where they showed their newest WebGL library. This one looked rather promising, and with it hosted on Github, I might join in modifying it.

The keynote, about the game EVE Online itself, was quite good, with information both about the upcoming release as well as future outlooks.

I did participate in the traditional pub-crawl, despite no coffee-crawl being available. I registered in the one group with most of the 3rd-party developers to get to talk with a few. There was a quite funny scene right before the start when several attendees gathered in the large hall. From above, one CCP dev shouted through a megaphone "Ok, so who's from group 1 here already?" and a few raising their hands. Then "What about group 5?" and again some hands and shouts. Soon enough, the attendees got bored and took matters into their own hands - shouting their numbers and moving around. It was quite a scene like on a market.
After a few minutes of shouting, the dev asked for silence and cheekingly asked "Uhm, how's that procedure for you? I mean, does it work? Because we have planned to announce each group in succession with a flag carrier coming down the stairs who you should then follow..." - and earned shouts and boos :)

I followed my group only into two pubs, after which most of the people got too drunk. At least I've got a souvenir in the form of a shot-glass.

The third day then started, also traditionally, with the movie morning (As most of the attendees where not usable for anything else ;) . In essence there were again the (for me) boring music videos with random ships shooting others and occasionally the classics like "Concordokken", "EVE Hell" or "Future Proof". (Providing the links I realize that EVE Hell had its audio track removed for copyright violations - too bad, it is my favourite funny video)

The sessions I then participated were not that interesting, but there were hardly any for me on that day. The final keynote, about the company and future plans, was received with mixed feelings, judging by the responses on the forums. While it is interesting that CCP are planning to distribute the brand also via comics or even a TV series in the future, the keynote hardly provided anything about the core game, EVE Online. I guess most likely because of the keynote from the previous day.

The best experience was definitely the symphony, but other than that I'm currently playing with the idea to simply book the online video stream next year.

Ich hatte nicht genug Zeit um über den zweiten oder dritten Tag zu schreiben, darum jetzt mit diesem Eintrag über beide.

Am zweiten Tag startete ich mit einem Vortrag über CCP ihr anderes Spiel: "World of Darkness", dessen Inhalt wohl war "Es wird kein fertiges Spiel für ein oder zwei Jahre geben". Später war ich wieder im dev-track, wo ihre neueste WebGL Bibliothek vorgestellt wurde. Diese sah recht vielversprechend aus und da sie auf Github gespeichert ist, werde ich vielleicht beitragen sie zu verbessern.

Die Hauptansprache, übder das Spiel EVE Online selbst, war recht gut mit Informationen sowohl über die kommende Erweiterung sowie zukünftige Pläne.

I nahm dann auch am traditionellen pub-crawl teil, obwohl es keinen coffee-crawl gab. I hatte mich für die Gruppe mit den Applikationsentwicklern registriert, um mit denen ein wenig plaudern zu können. Es gab eine recht witzige Szene kurz vor Beginn als die Teilnehmer anfingen sich in der Halle zu sammeln. Von oben hatte ein CCP Entwickler durch ein Megaphon geschrien "Ok, wer ist schon von Gruppe 1 da?" und ein paar hatten ihre Hände gehoben. Dann "Und von Gruppe 5?" und wieder ein paar Hände und Rufe. Bald war es den Teilnehmern genug, nahmen es selbst in die Hand und schrien deren Nummern und tauschten Plätze. Es war eine Szene wie am Markt.
Nach einigen Minuten Herumschreierei hatte der Entwickler um Ruhe gebeten und fragte grinsend "Ähm, wie läuft das so für Euch? Ich mein, funktioniert das? Weil wir hatten uns vorgstellt einfach die Nummern nach der Reihe aufzurufen, einen Flaggenträger die Stufen runtergehen zu lassen und Ihr schließt Euch an..." - und erntete Buhrufe :)

Ich folgte meiner Gruppe nur durch zwei Lokale, danach waren die Leute schon zu betrunken. Zumindest hab ich ein Souvenier in der Form eines Schnapsglases.

Der dritte Tag startete, ebenfalls traditionell, mit dem Film-Morgen (Nachdem die meißten der Teilnehmer kaum für was anderes brauchbar waren ;) . In Summe waren es die (für mich) langweiligen Musikvideos mit zufälligen Schiffen mit anderen kämfpend sowie ein paar Klassikern wie "Concordokken", "EVE Hell" oder "Future Proof". (Als ich die Links einfügte hab ich bemerkt, dass EVE Hell die Tonspur wegen Copyright gesperrt hat. Schade, es ist mein liebstes Humorvideo)

Die Vorträge denen ich zuhörte waren weniger interessant, aber es gab kaum welche für mich an diesem Tag. Die finale Hauptansprache, über die Firmenpläne, wurde nach den Forenbeiträgen mit gemischten Gefühlen aufgenommen. Obwohl es interessant ist, dass CCP plant die Marke auch über Comics oder gar einer Fernsehserie vertreiben möchte, die Ansprache hatte kaum etwas über das Kernspiel, EVE Online, zu bieten. Ich vermute wohl weil das schon am Vortag behandelt wurde.

Das beste Erlebnis war auf jeden Fall die Symphonie, aber abgesehen davon spiele ich aktuell mit dem Gedanken nächstes Jahr wohl nur das online Videoangebot zu buchen.

EVE Fanfest 2013, Day 1

Getting to the venue a little sooner was a good idea, although it could have been earlier. A very strong wind was freezing us standing in the queue outside the hall. And this not enough, another queue was formed for the tickets of the pub crawl.

The sessions that I joined were interesting as always, although it felt a little slow at times - most likely because it was the first day. There was even a wedding of two that wanted to do this at fanfest.

I realize I haven't made any pictures - most likely because all the motivs are pretty much the same like last year(s)...

Let's see what today brings!

Zum Veranstaltungsort etwas früher zu gehen war eine gute Idee, obwohls noch früher hätte sein können. Ein sehr starker Wind hatte uns in der Warteschlange vor der Halle erfroren. Und dem nicht genug, eine zweite Schlange gabs dann auch noch für das "Pub Crawl".

Den Vorträgen denen ich beiwohnte waren interessant wie immer, obwohl sich der Tag etwas zäh anfühlte - vermutlich weil es der erste Tag war. Es gab sogar eine Hochzeit von zweien, die das unbedingt am Fanfest machen wollten.

Ich komme drauf, dass ich bislang gar keine Bilder gemacht habe - vermutlich weil alle Motive bislang ziemlich die gleichen wie die letzten Jahre waren...

Mal sehen was Heute alles bringt!

 

A small holiday

I spent the last two days mostly in cafes, reading books and following the online news of various others coming to Iceland - as well as watching the weather changing in various directions. Yesterday for example, the morning started with heavy snowfall and the day ended with blaring sunshine in the evening.

But the most important event of yesterday was the EVE Symphony for which I had a ticket. I sat in the second row, right in the middle - and it was simply amazing. I always wanted to see and hear Video Games Live, and this came close to it. The musicians didn't look very satisified in the end with the standing ovations. They indeed had a few mistakes along the performance, but it were thousands of listeners that never heard their game music played by an orchestra. The first recording is here.

Merely one hour left, and fanfest actually starts!

Ich habe die letzten Zwei Tage hauptsächlich in Cafes verbracht - mit Bücher und dem Verfolgen der Neuigkeiten der Anderen die auch nach Island kommen - Sowie auch dem Wetter, wie es in die verschiedenen Richtungen wechselte. Gestern zum Beispiel startete der Morgen mit einem Schneesturm und der Tag endete mit grellem Sonnenschein am Abend.

Aber das wichtigste Ereignis gestern war die EVE Symphonie für die ich eine Karte hatte. Ich saß in der zweiten Reihe, genau in der Mitte - und es war ein Wahnsinn. Ich wollte schon immer Video Games Live sehen und hören und das kam recht nahe ran. Die Musiker waren am Ende nicht ganz zufrieden mit den stehenden Ovationen. Sie hatten tatsächlich ein paar Fehler während der Aufführung gemacht, aber es waren tausende Zuhörer, die noch nie ihre Spielmusik von einem Orchester gehört hatten. Die erste Aufnahme ist hier.

Grad mal eine Stunde übrig, dann geht das Fanfest los!
