EVE Fanfest 2012, Day 3 (a little late)

Sunday and Monday were a little hectic, so, the writeup about day 3 a little late. It started of nice with the 'Movie Morning', the appropriate thing for most of those that attended the pub crawl the night before.

With nearly no other session in the 'morning' (10am), they showed the fan-made movie "Clear Skies 3" during Movie Morning. Although already seen, it was nice to have it on the big screen as well. The tactics video afterwards did not catch that much of my interest - although there was a good idea to link two carrier ships together, repairing each other.

Furthermore I attended the round tables for programmers and the one for the now highly delayed Walking-In-Stations work. I guess it will take at least two more years until we see some substantial extension in this regard.

The whole thing was then wrapped up with the third key-note where they showed off various planned features and a new trailer - which of course brought standing ovations.

Next years fanfest, also for EVE's 10th anniversary, will happen next year in April - another year to wait.

Sonntag und Montag waren etwas hektisch, deswegen die Zusammenfassung über den dritten Tag etwas verspätet. Er startete recht nett mit dem 'Film Morgen', das Passende für viele, die am Vorabend beim Pub-Crawl dabei waren.

Fast ohne Konkurrenz in der 'Früh' (10Uhr) wurde der Fan-Film "Clear Skies 3" im Film Morgen gezeigt. Obwohl ich ihn bereits gesehen hatte war es nett ihn auf der großen Leinwand zu sehen. Das Video über Taktiken danach war nicht so interessant für mich - obwohl es eine gute Idee war, Carrier-Schiffe sich gegenseitig reparieren zu lassen.

Weiters war ich dann in Diskussionsrunden von Entwicklern und einer für die nun stark verspäteten Walking-In-Stations Erweiterungen. Ich denke es wird noch gut zwei Jahre dauern bevor wir eine handfeste Erweiterung erhalten werden.

Das Ganze wurde dann mit der dritten Ansprache abgerundet, wo sie wieder verschiedene geplante Funktionen und einen neuen Trailer zeigten - dieser hatte natürlich wieder stehenden Applaus erhalten.

Das nächste Fanfest, auch zu EVEs 10. Jubiläum, wird nächstes Jahr im April stattfinden - ein weiteres Jahr zu warten.

EVE Fanfest 2012, Day 2

I started off the second day of fanfest with attending the devtrack sessions - at least the first ones as I was less interested in the talks of the external developers of specific programs.

The new CREST API from CCP looks interesting and has much potential, I yet have to figure out though whether it helps with my project. I hope CCP will release the original source of their map/ship viewer widgets.

I also attended the round table for sound/music, but I had the feeling this was less a discussion, more a "During the past years we have been tinkering with this - would you like that?" presentation. It's been ten years and only now they start to think on dynamic music and applying effects on sounds? My question would have been "What have you been doing all this time?" but that wouldn't be nice nor do I have the full picture.

My next disappointment was that the pub crawl was alcohol only. I was hoping they'd do a coffee crawl like last year, but apparently this community is yet another that can only have fun when being highly intoxicated.

On to day three - the last one. I'm planning to see the movies (hopefully with new ones) and to attend some round tables for further discussions.

Ich begann den zweiten Tag mit der Teilnahme an den Entwicklervorträgen - zumindest den ersten da ich weniger interessiert an den spezifischen Programmen externer Entwickler war.

Die neue CREST API von CCP sieht interessant aus und hat Potential, ich muß aber noch feststellen, ob sie mir bei meinem Projekt hilft. I hoffe, dass CCP den originalen Code der Schiff-/Karten-Anzeige freigibt.

Ich war auch bei der Diskussionsrunde für Ton/Musik, aber ich hatte den Eindruck, dass das weniger eine Diskussion war, mehr eine "Während der letzten Jahre wir haben hiermit gebastelt, was hält Ihr davon?" Präsentation. Es sind nun zehn Jahre und erst jetzt denken sie über dynamische Musik und Effekte für Töne nach? Meine Frage wäre gewesen "Was habt ihr die ganze Zeit gemacht?" aber das wäre nicht nett gewesen und ich hab auch nicht den Überblick.

Meine nächste Enttäuschung war, dass "pub crawl" nur alkoholisch war. Ich hatte gehofft, dass es eins für die Cafes wie letztes Jahr geben würde, aber anscheinend ist diese Gemeinschaft eine weitere, die nur Spaß haben kann wenn sie schwerst betrunken ist.

Auf zu Tag Drei - dem letzten. Ich plane mir die Filme anzusehen (hoffentlich mit neuen) und an ein paar weiteren Diskussionsrunden teilzunehmen.

EVE Fanfest 2012, Day 1

First day of EVE Fanfest happened, and it was great already.

The keynote about the upcoming DUST 514 FPS on the PS3 including a live demo looked great and although there were already available hands-on machines to test, I opted to see the alliance panel (a panel of rather drunk alliance leader - didn't change to last year) and the open-mic night.

I was hoping the open-mic night would be as funny as it was last year, but apparently hardly anyone showed interest. It came down to a small group of players and devs to talk about various topics in parallel. And the mic stayed open.

Taking the Mac-Book with me was a good idea, I was thus able to stay online most of the time, follow Twitter and post a few messages on my own. Today I'll take the power supply with me as well.

Der erste Tag vom EVE Fanfest ist vorbei und er war großartig.

Die Keynote über das kommende Spiel DUST 514 auf der PS3 inklusive einer live-Demo sah toll aus und obwohl die ersten test Maschinen verfügbar waren, wollte ich mir das Allianz-Panel (mit einigen recht betrunkenen Allianzleiter - hat sich nicht verändert zu letztem Jahr) sowie die Open-Mic Nacht geben.

Ich hatte gehofft, die Open-Mic Nacht wird genauso lustig wie letztes Jahr, doch anscheinend hatte kaum jemand Interesse gezeigt. Am Ende waren es nur eine handvoll Spieler, die mit Entwickler über diverse Themen parallel sprachen. Und das Mikrophon blieb offen.

Das Mac-Book mitzunehmen war eine gute Idee, ich war daher in der Lage fast durchgängig im Netz zu sein, Twitter Nachrichten zu verfolgen und selbst einige zu verschicken. Heute werde ich das Netzteil ebenfalls mitnehmen.

Northern dark

The sky looked promising yesterday and I bought a ticket to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in the night.

The bus ride was well over an hour into the land, to escape city light poisioning. But the farther we drove inwards, the thicker the clouds became. After a short rest at a gas station - with people from two busses were raiding the facilities - we drove back towards Reykjavik to find a spot with a broken sky.

Waiting for nature to happen, we stood quite some time again. Until declaring it over at midnight - without any event. I guess I'll have to wait yet another year.

Anyway, tourist part over - fanfest to begin! The first tweets are already from people waiting in the hall, I'm about to head out myself.

Der Himmel sah gestern vielversprechend aus und ich kaufte eine Karte für die Nordlichter (Aurora Borealis) in der Nacht.

Die Busreise dauerte gut über eine Stunde ins Landinnere, um der Stadtlichtvergiftung zu entfliehen. Aber je weiter wir fuhren, umso dicker wurde die Wolkendecke. Nach einer kurzen Rast an einer Tankstelle - wo Leute aus zwei Bussen die Toiletten überfielen - fuhren wir wieder zurück Richtung Reykjavik um einen Platz mit aufgebrochenem Himmel zu finden.

Wartend dass Natur passiert, standen wir dann eine lange Weile. Bis um Mitternacht es für beendet erklärt wurde - ohne das was passiert war. Ich denke ich werde ein weiteres Jahr warten müssen.

Wie auch immer, Touristen-Teil vorbei - Fanfest beginnt! Die ersten Kurznachrichten kommen von den Leuten in der Halle, ich werde auch gleich losbrechen.

Going beneath the earth to learn something old

I went for a short nap yesterday afternoon - either from jetlag or general exhaustion - either way, it's my holiday :P In the evening I then visited that Pakistani/Indian restaurant - and impressed the waiter there with my Hindi knowledge.

It was a nice restaurant - the food was fine as well - and let me stay for a while. Afterwards I went to a cafe we had been shown last year through our coffee crawl - Cafe Babalu. They had some faulty Wi-Fi connection, so not much to do there.

I started today with a visit to the "Reykjavik Settlement Excavation" - shortly named "871 +/-2" for its dating of the found remains. They hand out iPod Nano for their audio guides.

Lunch was held again in Cafe Loki - and for the first time the clouds broke up and I saw the sunshine for once in Island. Didn't last long though.

I'm also following various tweets from other fanfest goers, but so far I didn't come across some - And following them to some bars to their intoxication is not my style...

Gestern Nachmittag hielt ich dann ein kleines Schläfchen - entweder vom Jetlag oder sonstiger Erschöpfung - jedenfalls, es ist mein Urlaub :P Am Abend besuchte ich dann das Pakistanisch-/Indische Restaurant und beeindruckte den Kellner mit meinen Hindikenntnissen.

Es war ein nettes Restaurant - das Essen auch gut - und ließ mich eine Weile dort verbleiben. Nachher ging ich zu einem Cafe welches uns letztes Jahr beim Coffe-Crawl gezeigt wurde - Cafe Babalu. Die hatten eine schlechte Wi-Fi Anbindung, daher nicht so viel zu machen dort.

Heute startete ich mit einem Besuch der "Reykjavik Siedlungs-Ausgrabung" - kurz genannt "871 +/-2" für die Datierung der gefundenen Überreste. Die verteilen dort iPod Nano für die Toninformationen.

Mittagessen hielt ich wieder im Cafe Loki - und zum ersten Mal brachen die Wolken auf und ich sah Sonnenschein zur Abwechslung Mal in Island. Hatte jedoch nicht lang gedauert.

Ich verfolge auch verschiedene Twitter Kurzmitteilungen von anderen Fanfest Besuchern, doch bislang traf ich auf niemanden - Und sie in irgendwelche Bars zu deren Betrunkenheit folgen ist auch nicht meins...

Venturing through side-streets

I was thinking about doing the extended tours around Reykjavik, but reading about their landmarks, I saw nothing new that much of interest compared to last year. So I opted in to go thorugh the city by foot again and see what I can find.

I took a closer look at the Harpa center and made several pictures of the glass facade. Going further it seems like this will become a trip of culinary adventures. I already found an Indian restaurant I'm now planning to visit at one of the upcoming evenings (it has upen until 11pm).

My first break was at the Cafe I wanted to visit yesterday: Cafe Loki. It has a few traditional dishes on the menu (fish based) that I already tasted last year. This time round I went for the plate that has a few bits of the "strong tasted shark". The waitress said "Don't try to bite it off, just chew it a little bit, then swallow". It tastes interesting, quite refreshing and reminds me of some taste/smell I can't put my finger on.

I'm now in a Cafe called "C is for cookies", serving various bakery along coffee. I was just reminded that one gets free refill on coffee.

Free Wi-Fi is available pretty much everywhere as it appears - even included in my hotel, unlike last year to pay extra.

Other impressions include the observation that many car drivers are still fearful of the snow as they still got spikes fitted.

Since Cafe Loki is right next to the church I took the opportunity to go up again and have a look around. I didn't stay long - the wind made it quite cold - also, the view isn't that much different than last year, even without snow :)

Ich hatte mir überlegt die längeren Touren in und um Reykjavik zu machen, aber nachdem ich über deren Höhepunkte gelesen hatte fand ich nichts neues, das es im Vergleich zu letztem Jahr Wert gewesen wäre. Also entschied ich mich durch die Stadt zu wandern und zu sehen was ich finde.

Ich ging näher zur Harpa Halle hin und machte mehrere Bilder von der Fassade. Später erkannte ich dann, dass das wohl ein kulinarischer Ausflug werden würde. Ich habe bereits ein indisches Lokal gefunden, das ich an einem der kommenden Abenden besuchen möchte (es hat bis 23 Uhr offen).

Meine erste Pause war in dem Cafe das ich schon gestern besuchen wollte: Cafe Loki. Es hat einige traditionelle Gerichte (auf Fischbasis) auf der Speisekarte, die ich schon letztes Jahr probierte. Dieses Mal nahm ich die Platte die auch ein paar Stücke von dem "geschmacklich starken Hai" hat. Die Kellnerin sagte "Nicht versuchen etwas abzubeißen, nur etwas kauen und dann schlucken". Der schmeckt interessant, recht erfrischend und erinnert mich an einen Geschmack/Geruch, den ich nicht genau beschreiben kann.

Jetzt bin ich in einem Cafe mit dem Namen "C is for cookies" (quasi: "K ist für Kekse), welches diverse Bäckereien mit Kaffee anbietet. Ich wurde auch grad daran erinnert, dass man hier gratis Kaffee nachgeschenkt bekommt.

Freies Wi-Fi ist so ziemlich überall verfügbar so wie es scheint - selbst in meinem Hotel inklusive, anders als letztes Jahr wo ich extra zahlen durfte.

Weitere Eindrücke beinhalten meine Beobachtung, dass viele Autofahrer noch den Schnee fürchten, da sie immer noch mit Spikes ausgerüstet sind.

Da das Cafe Loki gleich neben der Kirche ist nahm ich die Gelegenheit und fuhr auf den Turm hinauf um mich wieder umzusehen. Ich blieb nicht lang oben - der Wind macht es recht kalt - und, die Aussicht ist nicht so viel anders als letztes Jahr, selbst ohne Schnee :)

Of Icelandic weather and atomic shelter

Back in Iceland! And it feels as if it was only yesterday.

Last year I landed in a whiteout - with snow everywhere the rest of the week.This time, we came through the clouds - and no snow; I could see the grass! But it started raining as soon as we had landed. With a strong wind.

The hotel is not as near to the church, which I had chosen as my fixpoint, as I thought, but still reachable within a few minutes of walking.

I headed out to the Cafe I wanted to visit for dinner, only to find out it is is closed past 6pm. As is apparently everything else. The only ones wandering around were tourists, like me - although I was even an exotic tourist with an umbrella. It never rained so much to make it worth trying fight against the wind with an open umbrella.
I then wandered around to look for another restaurant to go to; I found a few but couldn't decide - until I went to one that closed at 8pm, so I quickly finished my soup.

Nightlife in Reykjavik happens in the bars I remembered.

My walks brought me even near the concert hall that will house the fanfest - so, the obliatory first on-site post with the picture added. Furthermore I came across a public toilet, which looked like the streetside atomic shelters in the game Fallout 3.

Also as to be expected, at the reception they put the notice regarding the cancelled daily trip to see aurora borealis. I think I'll not see them this year either.

 

Zurück in Island! Und es fühlt sich an als wäre es gestern gewesen.

Letztes Jahr landeten wir in einem Whiteout - mit Schnee überall den Rest der Woche. Dieses Mal, als wir durch die Wolken durchbrachen - kein Schnee; Ich konnte das Gras sehen! Doch es fing an zu regnen als wir gelandet waren. Mit einem starken Wind.

Das Hotel ist nicht ganz so nahe der Kirche, die ich als Ausgangspunkt gewählt habe, als ich dachte, aber immer noch in ein paar Minuten zu Fuß erreichbar.

Ich ging zum Cafe los, das ich für das Abendessen geplant hatte, nur um festzustellen, dass es ab 18 Uhr geschlossen hat. Wie so ziemlich alles andere. Die fast einzigen, die umherliefen waren Touristen wie ich - obwohl ich vermutlich ein exotischer Tourist bin mit einem Schirm. Es hatte nie stark genug geregnet um es Wert zu sein mit einem offenen Schirm gegen den Wind zu kämpfen.

Ich war dann auf der Suche nach einem anderen Restaurant; Ich fand ein paar und konnte mich nicht entscheiden - bis ich dann eines nahm, das um 20 Uhr schließt, also aß ich schnell die Suppe fertig.

Das Nachtleben in Reykjavik passiert in den Bars fiel mir ein.

Meine Spaziergänge brachten mich nahe zu der Konzerthalle, in der das Fanfest statt finden wird - also, das obligatorische Foto zum ersten Eintrag. Außerdem kam ich an einer öffentlichen Toilette vorbei, die aussieht wie die Straßenseitigen Atomschutzzellen im Spiel Fallout 3.

Auch wie fast zu erwarten, an der Rezeption war die Nachricht ausgehängt, dass der heutige Ausflug für die Aurora Borealis abgesagt wurde. Ich denke auch dieses Jahr werde ich keine sehen.

Fanfest Time!

EVE Fanfest 2012 is around the corner! From the 19th I will be in Iceland again for one week and preparations are underway.

Most important of all, it stayed cold in Austria the recent days, so there's not too much of a jump - they got around zero degrees celcius currently.

I'm yet not sure what to do the two remaining free days (Tuesday and Wednesday) but it might be joining the extended tours around Reykjavik and surroundings. Last year I only did the half tours.

EVE Fanfest 2012 ist bald! Vom 19. werde ich wieder in Island für eine Woche sein und die Vorbereitungen sind im Gange.

Das Wichstige von allem, es blieb kalt in Österreich die letzten Tage, somit ist kein all zu starker Unterschied - die haben es gerade um die Null Grad.

Ich bin noch nicht sicher was ich die zwei verbleibenden Tage (Dienstag und Mittwoch) machen werde aber vermutlich werde ich mir die zwei langen Touren durch Reykjavik und Umgebung geben. Letztes Jahr waren es nur die halben Touren.
